Food is a lot of things to us. Food is something that brings us together. Food is something that defines our cultures and origins.
But most importantly, food is fuel. Food is fuel for your body, and it is imperative to remember that your body is the vehicle to all your hopes and dreams, both in the gym and in life. In today’s society we have become disconnected with that truth, and I believe it to be the root cause of our rapidly deteriorating state of health and fitness. Would you put cheap gas in a Ferrari? Didn't think so.
With a new diet fad, weight loss pill, or medical procedure promising to put you back in control of your health popping up seemingly overnight, there is only one approach that consistently provides long term health and happiness.
"Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food"- Hippocrates
There is nothing groundbreaking about it. No fancy terms, no proprietary blends, no new age clinical study to prove its potential merits. All that exists is generation after generation of strong and healthy people to serve as examples of strictly adhering to two principles when it comes to nutrition.
Education, and simplicity. If you know what your body needs to run optimally, and understand that the fewer ingredients a food has the more beneficial it is, you are well on your way to living a long and healthy life with the body of your dreams.
My approach when it comes to nutrition is brutally simplistic. Cut out all processed foods and focus on consuming lean protein, grass-fed dairy, whole grains, and as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible.
I don’t emphasize counting calories or macronutrients unless radical changes in one’s physique are desired. Our bodies are self-regulating when provided with wholesome food and adequate exercise.
Our bodies are also unique metabolically. It is your responsibility to learn how YOUR body responds to food and exercise. And doing so is, you guessed it, SIMPLE. Eat when you are hungry. Eat until you are full. Do those two things with strictly WHOLE food, and incorporate the proper amounts of various food groups, and you’re set for life! I know, mind blowing!
The last part of the nutrition puzzle that you will see me drive home again and again, and then a little bit more, is consistency. If you eat ultra clean food 5-6 days out of the week and then eat (or drink!) garbage on 1-2 days (weekends!) that just ain’t gonna cut it. You need to be 100% committed 100% of the time. The difference between someone in elite shape and someone in OK shape is not genetic, it’s not what they’re taking, it’s consistency.
